UH women’s basketball team drops fourth straight game

Brittany Johnson scored 29 points on 10-for-20 shooting as the San Jose State women’s basketball team dealt Hawaii its fourth straight loss, 67-58, tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Vicky Tagalicod and Breanna Arbuckle scored 13 points apiece for UH (8-15, 3-5 Western Athletic Conference), which fell into fifth place. SJSU (9-14, 4-4) took sole possession of fourth.

SJSU hadn’t won in Honolulu since 2005.

UH cut it to 52-44 with under 9 minutes left on a Tagalicod inside basket, then got it to six on an Arbuckle score.

But SJSU answered with the next two baskets to get it back to double digits, and kept it there until Sydney Haydel hit a free throw with under 4 minutes to play.

Kanisha Bello nailed a 3-pointer with 3 minutes left to make it 61-54.

Arbuckle hit a baseline jumper to make it 63-58 with 1:30 left, but the Spartans executed effectively in the final minute while the Wahine turned it over twice.

SJSU led 38-25 at halftime behind 14 first-half points by Johnson. UH shot 5-for-23 (21.7 percent) in the period.
