An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment charging Lance Cpl. Brandon L. Calhoun, 22, with second-degree attempted murder.

The  Kaneohe Marine, accused of beating a 48-year-old man into a coma, remained in custody Wednesday at Oahu Community Correctional Center unable to post $200,000 bail after his indictment Tuesday..

The victim remains in a coma in a hospital in critical condition, said Vickie Kapp, deputy city prosecutor.

Kapp said Calhoun and the victim were arguing in Waikiki on Feb. 8 when Calhoun punched the victim at least seven times causing cuts and fractures to the man’s skull and face. She said Calhoun also struck the victim with a chair.

Police arrested Calhoun at 2155 Lauula St.

Kapp said Calhoun gave police a statement denying hitting the other man with a chair. However, witnesses said Calhoun used a chair, Kapp said.
