A 41-year-old man shot his wife to death before taking his own life this morning at a house near Waimea Bay, police said.
Police Capt. Britt Nishijo said the case is being investigated as a murder-suicide. Another man at the house sustained non-life-threatening injuries, Nishijo said.
The names of the people involved have not been released.
Nishijo said the 41-year-old man broke into a house about 8:45 a.m. rented by a 43-year-old man at 59-811 Kamehameha Highway, on a bluff overlooking Waimea Bay.
The intruder shot his wife, a 40-year-old woman, before shooting himself, Nishijo said. Both bodies were found in a carport. Nishijo said it is believed the couple was estranged. They are Hawaii residents but it was not said specifically where they live.
The home’s renter was treated at the scene for injuries.
A police officer on patrol in the area heard gunshots, a pause, more gunshots then a "large crash," Nishijo said.
A gun was recovered at the scene. Police found the intruder’s vehicle parked down the road.
George McFarland, 60, a volunteer at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church across the road from the shooting scene, said he heard more than a dozen shots in the space of 30 to 60 seconds. He said it sounded like the shots came from the same gun.
McFarland said he heard six to eight shots, then a muffled shot, then four more shots, then three to four more shots in rapid succession.
He said the lane the house is on is used by many people as a beach access.
