Brides-to-be can meet with Alfred Angelo’s Shettel

The Bridal Boutique welcomes Alfred Angelo Bridal designer Michael Shettel from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at its new space at 627 South St. and is taking appointments to meet the designer, with a $50 reservation fee.

Shettel, who has led the Alfred Angelo design team since 1999, is debuting his newest 2012 bridal gown styles during exclusive engagements across the country. He will also be signing sketches for brides who purchase their gown on the day of the event.

Alfred Angelo is the exclusive designer of the 2012 Disney Fairy Tale Weddings gown collection, and the Bridal Boutique will carry the entire line for local "princesses."

Textile artists display work at Lyon Arboretum

Textile and fiber art enthusiasts may want to check out "Kinu & Kapa (Silk & Bark Cloth): An Asia-Pacific Collaboration," on view at the Lyon Arboretum, 3860 Manoa Road, through March 3.

Visiting Kyoto artist Akihiko Izukura and kapa practitioner Moana Eisele shared their fiber work and natural dyeing experiences with other veteran dyers, weavers and kapa makers during an intensive gathering organized by TEMARI, Center for Asian and Pacific Arts, and the arboretum, and the exhibition is a result of the session.

Most of the artists involved have been pursuing their craft for more than 30 years. Participants made dyes from plants from the arboretum, shared dyes made from materials grown in their gardens and prepared silk from cocoons spun on Hawaii island.

Exhibition hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Call 988-0456.

Volunteers, talents sought for Goodwill showcase

Goodwill Industries of Hawaii is hosting a "Call for Talent" Feb. 25 in support of the inaugural Bank of Hawaii presents "Goodwill Goes GLAM! Talent Showcase and Treasure Marketplace," taking place in August.

Goodwill is looking for volunteers to provide retail support, visual merchandising, video production, photography, social media, security, administration, construction and event booth support. Also needed are stylists, models, beauty professionals, fashion show producers, mobile app tech teams, writers and bloggers.

The search takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the HIFI Coop and conference rooms at Ward Warehouse. Walk-ins are welcome, but those who register by Monday will receive priority placement in line. To register, go to www.higoodwill.org and click "Call for Talent Volunteer."

Attendees are encouraged to bring portfolios for review by industry professionals who will match individual skills to event segments, helping newcomers gain experience and job-readiness, and providing professionals with networking opportunities.

The GLAM event will feature a dinner, fashion show and 20,000-square-foot marketplace of items donated by retail partners and collected from Goodwill stores. Call 836-0313.

Bella Boutique offering formal dresses to teens

High school girls short of cash and in need of a prom or formal dress may be able to find one free at Bella Boutique, hosted by the Junior League of Hono­lulu, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Hono­lulu Design Center, 1250 Kapiolani Blvd.

The event, open to female students with high school ID, features gently used donated gowns, dresses, footwear and accessories. Sign up by email, thebellaprojecthawaii@ gmail.com. Include your name and first, second and third choices of time preferences. Slots are available in 15-minute intervals beginning at 10 a.m.

Swimsuit issue features isle model and swimwear

The Sports Illustrated 2012 Swimsuit issue is out, and among the featured brands is Hawaii-based Acacia Swimwear, created by Naomi Newirth and Lyndie Irons, wife of the late world champion surfer Andy Irons. Jessica Gomes is the model.

Also spotted is ‘Iolani graduate Michelle Vawer. In a nice emailed note, a reader reminded me, "Your 2009 prediction of Michelle Vawer for SI just happened!"

In November 2009 I wrote of Vawer on my Fashion Tribe blog, "I just wonder how long it will be before Sports Illustrated comes calling for its swimsuit edition?"
