Pipeline was as big and perfect as one could ever dream of during the second day of the International Bodyboarding Association’s Pipe Pro on Thursday.
It was a consistent 10-12 feet with the occasional 15-foot bomb rolling in. Lifeguards were claiming it was the best Pipeline they have seen for a contest in three years. Huge barrels went down all day, with everyone pushing themselves to the limit in the treacherous surf.
Two perfect 10s were recorded. The first was from Reunion Island’s Charly Chapelet and the second was from 18-year-old Matt Holzman from Kekaha, Kauai.
Holzman described his wave as "big enough to drive a truck through."
"It was a double up," he added. "I just scooped into it and then everything went slow motion in the barrel. I think I was in the barrel for 3 seconds, but it was the most intense 3 seconds I have ever had inside of a wave. Then the wave just spat me out of it. The wave spat so hard my fin came off. Luckily I found it pretty quick. It was definitely one of the best barrels of my entire life"
Even though the conditions were perfect, the waves were far from easy to catch. Mountains of whitewater caught many competitors off guard.
Honolulu’s Kainoa McGee, a Pipeline regular who has been bodyboarding the place for 25 years, was one competitor who had it wired.
"The direction and waves are sick right now," said McGee. "It’s the best contest I have surfed out here in a long time. It’s not as easy as it looks, though, and that’s what’s good about it. You have to go out there and still earn it regardless of how many titles you won and how many years you have been surfing out here."
Going into the final day, some top names advancing were Spencer Skipper, Mike Stewart, Paulo Barcellos, Alistair Taylor, Andrew Lester and McGee.
Joshua Kleve from South Africa got the highest combined heat score of the day with an 18.8.
