Jeff Hubbard won the International Bodyboarding Association’s Pipe Pro for the second year in a row on Friday in flawless 6- to 8-foot waves.
Pipeline legend Mike Stewart took second place on a day filled with perfect barrels, with many claiming it was the best day at Pipeline for a contest in 15 years.
All day, after every good ride the crowd erupted regardless of which rider it was. This contest was a win for bodyboarding.
“To surf Pipeline with the best guys in the world and come out on top being back-to-back Pipe champ is a dream,” said Hubbard. “Getting your name on that board is an honor. All day I was thinking why not make it back-to-back.”
There was a decisive moment in the final when Hubbard and Stewart split a peak, with Hubbard going right at Backdoor and Stewart going left at Pipeline. The wave sealed the win for Hubbard.
“As soon as he was going left, I knew this is the wave I am going to win on,” Hubbard said. “I took off and made the barrel. When I came out, I went for a roll and landed it. As soon as I landed, it I was like wow.”
Hubbard won the final with an 18.65 heat total for his two best waves.
“It was awesome being in the final with Stewart,” he said. “I was watching him, thinking this guy invented bodyboarding.”
Stewart dominated his semifinal heat, getting two 9.0-plus rides to advance.
One wave in particular stood out for Stewart, when he pulled in deep, came out with the spit then did a huge air-roll-spin on the end section.
“It felt awesome to make the final,” Stewart said. “I can’t remember the last time I made the final. It was probably 15 years or something. I am stoked with second. Congrats to Jeff. He is a deserving winner.”
Two Australians, Dave Winchester and Sam Bennett, finished third and fourth.
