Fire causes $125,000 damage to Maunalani Heights home
Fire caused moderate damage to an older, single-story home in Maunalani Heights.
No one was injured from the 6:17 p.m. fire Monday at 1627 Paula St.
A woman in her 90s was working in her yard when she thought she smelled smoke coming from her house, Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig said. When she didn’t see anything, she went back outside to her gardening, he said. A son, who lives with the woman, was not home at the time of the fire. Firefighters arrived at the scene at 6:01 p.m. and had the fire under control by about 6:17 p.m., he said.
The fire appeared to have started in the attic and firefighters placed protective salvage covers, essentially large vinyl tarps, over furniture and the floor of the house before putting out the fire, Seelig said.
Investigators had not yet determined a cause. Seelig said there was about $125,000 damage to the attic area.
About 25 firefighters fought the blaze.
