Kalapana woman arrested after rifle pointed at passersby

Hawaii County police arrested a 34-year-old Kalapana woman Wednesday after receiving a report that someone was pointing a rifle at people in Kalapana.

Puna patrol officers responded to a call about 5:30 p.m. that a woman was pointing a rifle at passersby near the end of Highway 130. Officers arrested the suspect without incident and recovered an air rifle.

Police initiated a terroristic threatening case and released the woman Wednesday night without charges.

Police ask that anyone with information about this incident or similar incidents in the area call Detective Ernest Matsumoto at 961-2379, email him at, or call the police nonemergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
