The Honolulu Star-Advertiser sports staff won two "grand slam" honors in the national Associated Press Sports Editors writing and sections contest that ended Wednesday.
The APSE recognized the Star-Advertiser for a top-10 special section for the University of Hawaii women’s volleyball tab for newspapers with circulation between 75,001 and 175,000.
Sports reporters Cindy Luis and Ann Miller, photographer Jamm Aquino and graphic artist Martha Hernandez played key roles in this unique look at Dave Shoji’s volleyball team.
Two months ago, the paper won a top 10 for its sports website in the Class C division (less than 500,000 unique monthly visitors).
The and the Boston Globe were the only papers in the over-175,000 circulation division to complete the "grand slam." They earned top-10 recognition in four categories — daily, Sunday, and special sections to augment a top 10-website award previously announced in the Class A division (over 2 million monthly unique visitors) on Dec. 13.
