Fujikawa tied for 16th on eGolf Tour
Hawaii’s Tadd Fujikawa shot a 4-under-par 68 Thursday at the eGolf Tour’s Oldfield Open, in Okatie, S.C. Playing on the Oldfield Country Club course, Fujikawa had five birdies and an eagle to move up 66 places, into a tie for 16th.
He is four shots behind leaders Chris Naegel, Ryan Nelson and Joey McLister, who are at 6-under 136. The cut came at 143, with 63 golfers advancing to the final two rounds.
No. 2 USC downs No. 6 UH in water polo
Monica Vavic scored four goals and Eike Daube added a pair as No. 2 USC beat No. 6 Hawaii 12-6 at Los Angeles on Thursday in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women’s water polo opener for both teams.
Amarens Genee, Danielle Lewis and Kalei Guth each scored two goals for the Rainbow Wahine, who tied it at 3-3 early in the second period. USC then scored four in a row to take control. Hawaii’s Serena Reid made seven saves.
USC improved to 8-1 and 1-0; Hawaii fell to 2-4, 0-1.
UH’s Morrison finishes fifth in pentathlon
University of Hawaii sophomore Kaleigh Morrison placed fifth in the pentathlon Thursday at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Nampa, Idaho.
Morrison, of Tigard, Ore., scored a personal-best 3,298 points. She placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.34), 10th in the shot put (30 feet, 8.25 inches/9.35m), eighth in the long jump (17-2/5.23m), 11th in the 800-meter run (2:41.73) and tied for second in the high jump (5-5/1.65m). Hawaii sophomore Amanda Alvare finished 11th with 2,971 points. Utah State’s Chari Hawkins won the event with 3,669 points.
The meet continues today and Saturday.
HPU sweeps Dominican in basketball
Glenn Miller had 19 points and Fran Urli added 16 as Hawaii Pacific beat Dominican 69-62 on Thursday in a Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game at San Rafael, Calif.
Sean Jones had 12 points for the Sea Warriors, who finished 22-for-39 from the field and 23-for-29 from the line.
HPU improved to 11-12 and 6-9; Dominican dropped to 9-18 and 8-8.
» Mana Hopkins had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Taiyande Huskey added 10 points and 10 rebounds as the Hawaii Pacific women beat Dominican 78-44.
Melody Ladrido added 14 points, and Susannah Walmsley and Paris Gravely each added 13 points for the Sea Warriors.
HPU improved to 15-10 and 9-6; Dominican dropped to 4-22 and 3-13.
Hilo men lose, women triumph in hoops
Ameer Shamsud-din scored 27 points and William Overton Jr. added 24 as Academy of Art beat Hawaii-Hilo 74-71 on Thursday in a PacWest men’s basketball game at San Francisco.
Terrell Mack and Kiel Myers each scored 15 points, and Mychael Hearn added 12 for Hilo.
Academy of Art improved to 4-22 and 2-14; Hilo dropped to 8-15 and 2-13.
» Hillary Hurley had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Kirsten Shimizu added 15 points as the Hawaii-Hilo women beat Academy of Art 75-53.
Hilo improved to 12-12 and 9-6; Academy of Art dropped to 15-9 and 11-5.
