Man drowns at North Shore surf site
A 47-year-old Honolulu man drowned Thursday while surfing with friends at Rocky Point Lefts on the North Shore, officials said.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Howard Hutchings. The office said he drowned in an accident.
Other surfers found Hutchings in the water without a pulse and not breathing and brought him to shore at about 1 p.m., said Ocean Safety Division Operations Chief Jim Howe. Lifeguards responded to a 911 call and began CPR before paramedics took Hutchings to Wahiawa General Hospital.
Tourist found in hotel pool hospitalized
A Japanese visitor in his mid-70s was taken to the hospital in critical condition Friday after he was found at the bottom of a pool at Hilton Hawaiian Village.
Lifeguards found the man face down in the water and called firefighters at about 3:45 p.m., said Honolulu Fire Capt. Rick Karasaki. Hotel security began CPR and brought back the man’s pulse and got him breathing again.
Firefighters assisted paramedics who took the man to Straub Clinic & Hospital. An Emergency Medical Services supervisor said paramedics took the patient to the hospital in critical condition.
Visitor who died while snorkeling is ID’d
The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the Japanese tourist who drowned while snorkeling off Heeia Kea pier Tuesday as 67-year-old Ichiro Kawashima.
Kawashima drowned after diving off a tour boat in waters off Heeia Kea Pier. Paramedics and fire rescue personnel met the boat at the pier at about 11:13 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Medical Examiner’s Office classified his death as accidental.

Baby killed,6 adults hurt in van crash
A van carrying tourists from Japan crashed in Kau on Thursday, killing a 6-month-old boy and injuring six adults, Hawaii County police said.
Police said the boy’s father, a 36-year-old man, was driving a 2011 Dodge van south on Hawaii Belt Road when it veered off the shoulder at about 5 p.m. in Kapapala.
Police said the adults were wearing seat belts but that the infant was not in a child safety seat.
The baby, identified as Yuta Suzuki, was pronounced dead at 7:55 p.m. at Hilo Medical Center.
The driver and a 37-year-old man were treated and released from Kau Hospital.
Two women, 30 and age unknown, were admitted to Hilo Medical Center in serious condition. The boy’s mother, 28, was treated and released at Hilo Medical Center. A 39-year-old woman was taken to Hilo Medical Center for observation.
All seven people in the van are Japanese nationals visiting from Shinonawata.
Help sought in identifying man’s attacker
Hawaii County police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man wanted for questioning in connection with an assault of a tourist at Punaluu Black Sands Beach on Jan. 12.
A 29-year-old man from Meadow Lake, Ore., was taking pictures of turtles when a man confronted him and told him to stay away from the turtles. The suspect then punched the visitor in the eye and wrestled him to the ground. People nearby separated the men. The attacker left the beach.
