Thanks to a trio of freshmen, Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso can feel pretty good about his pitching staff playing its fifth game in four days.
Scott Squier and Kyle Dowdy combined on a four-hit shutout after David Longville retired the final 12 batters of the opener as Hawaii swept a doubleheader against Wagner College on Saturday.
Squier allowed two hits and struck out six in six innings as the Rainbows defeated the Seahawks 2-0 in the second game to stretch their winning streak to four games.
Longville had his second consecutive flawless outing for the Rainbows, striking out three in four innings to earn the win in a 6-2 victory in the first game.
“That’s a pretty good feeling to have three freshmen go out there and put up all those zeros in a doubleheader,” Trapasso said. “That’s going to bode well for their confidence and for our team as we keep going.”
Squier flashed the form that made him a 21st-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers out of Greenway High School in Phoenix.
After giving up a two-out double to Nick Dini in the third, he retired seven in a row, striking out three of the last four heading into the sixth.
Eddie Brown hit a leadoff double to snap the streak, but after two walks to load the bases, Squier got Chris Smith to fly out to left to preserve the shutout.
“I felt the same even though obviously I got better results,” Squier said. “I maybe felt a little more relaxed out there in my second (start).”
Longville threw at least four shutout innings for the second time in as many appearances for the Rainbows (5-3).
In his two outings this season, the 6-foot-3 freshman from Oxnard, Calif., has allowed just three hits in 8 2⁄3 innings with no walks and six strikeouts.
“He really settled everything,” Trapasso said. “I didn’t like the way (Jesse Moore’s) day was going — he had a little bit of bad luck — but we’re down 2-0 in a seven-inning game so I had to do something.”
Moore was tagged for seven hits and both Wagner runs in three innings before Longville came on in relief.
Jayson Keel hit an RBI single in the first and Nick Alfano doubled and scored in the second for a 2-0 Wagner lead.
Seahawks starter Danny Watson lost his command in the third, walking four batters, including Pi‘ikea Kitamura with the bases loaded to tie the game at 2-all.
UH took the lead for good in the fourth when Max Duval drilled the Rainbows’ first home run of the season over the wall in left.
“To be honest, I was a little surprised it went over,” Duval said. “I didn’t feel like it was a great hack, but I got enough of it.”
Zack Swasey, who had two hits in the game, singled and scored in the fifth, and Kitamura added a two-run single with two outs in the sixth for the final margin.
Wagner’s Dakota Dvorak and Ryan Carmon held Hawaii to four hits over nine innings in the second game, but the Rainbows scratched across two runs for the win.
Duval took a pitch off his hand in the second inning and scored on a fielder’s choice by Joe Goldenberg after the Seahawks (0-4) failed to turn a potential inning-ending double play.
Stephen Ventimilia singled with one out in the sixth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Breland Almadova after stealing second and taking third on an error.
Collin Bennett went 0-for-2 in the first game to end a 10-game hitting streak, but avoided going hitless on the day with a bunt single in the eighth inning of Game 2.
The series finale today is set for 1:05 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
“We need to get a good game offensively under our belts in this series because we really haven’t had one,” Trapasso said.
