Basketball season finales this week

The conference season concludes this week with four games in both men’s and women’s play.

On Thursday, Hawaii-Hilo hosts Hawaii Pacific, and Chaminade travels to Brigham Young-Hawaii. Saturday’s final night of play has Hawaii Pacific at BYUH and Hawaii-Hilo at Chaminade.

The women’s games start at 5 p.m. with the men’s games following at 7:30 p.m.

Last week, Dixie State clinched the PacWest men’s championship, as well as the automatic berth in the NCAA Division II West Regional, with a 77-73 overtime win over Brigham Young-Hawaii. The game was played in front of a record crowd of 4,368 at Burns Arena in St. George, Utah.

Last season, the Seasiders advanced to the D-II national final, losing to Bellarmine 71-68. BYUH has an outside chance at an at-large berth, but likely would need to win twice this week.

The women’s champion will be determined this week. Grand Canyon (13-3), Cal Baptist (13-3) and Dixie State (13-4) are all in contention, with Dixie State at Grand Canyon on Saturday in what could be the deciding contest.

Costello gets academic All-America honor

Chaminade senior guard Kelly Costello was named to the second team of the Capital One Academic All-American Women’s Basketball Team

Costello has a 4.0 grade-point average, with a double major in international trade and business administration.

Costello leads the Silverswords in 3-pointers with 34.
