Truck thief reportedly tries to run over owner in Kahala

Police were looking for a man who stole a truck from a customer at the Chevron gas station near Kahala Mall.

The man got into a truck parked at a gas pump with the keys still in the ignition and drove off Friday before the truck’s owner could stop him, said Kinis Eria, a Chevron cashier who witnessed the theft.

She said the thief was in the store only moments earlier, lingering a bit too long before eventually buying a drink and a candy bar. The thief walked outside and got into the truck while the truck owner was in line in the store.

The truck owner cautiously went out to his vehicle as if he thought the man was making a mistake, but had to jump out of the way as the driver took off, cutting through a short line of cars waiting for a gas pump, and fleeing Koko Head-bound on Waialae Avenue.

"I was like ‘oh my gosh,’" Eria said. The truck owner ran after his white vehicle, but couldn’t stop the man.

Eria said the in-store camera likely caught the man on video.

Police opened an attempted murder and auto theft case.
