Student may be behind threat, small fire in Iolani chapel

Iolani School believes a student may be behind a small fire set in St. Alban’s Chapel this week. A note left behind threatened more fires if demands weren’t met.

School Headmaster Val Iwashita told parents in an e-mail that the nature of the demands led school officials to believe a “young student” at Iolani School is behind the incident.

School officials declined to discuss what the demands were.

HPD is investigating. Iolani spokeswoman Cathy Lee Chong said the damage from the fire was minimal.

The damage was discovered Wednesday morning, and is believed to have been set Tuesday evening.

In an email to parents sent out Thursday, Iwashita said, “The safety of our Iolani family is our highest priority. We believe that the campus is safe.”

He also said the school has increased security on campus, and he asked faculty and parents to be on the lookout for suspicious activity.

In the email, Iwashita also asked parents to discuss the incident with their children and urge them to come forward if they know anything about it.

“They should know that it is not appropriate or ‘cool’ for them to protect this individual, even if they are friends,” Iwashita said.
