Honolulu is a finalist for a national Green City Award.

The honor from Waste & Recycling News recognizes the city for excellence in communication and promotion of its recycling program.

Other finalists in the Large City category are Halton, Ontario, and San Jose, California.

The city has emphasized education and outreach by sponsoring school recycling shows with Honolulu Theatre for Youth. It also airs "Opalavision" segments on "The Green Channel," one of the first eco-conscious networks in the nation.

The city Department of Environmental Services also has a Tour de Trash, an electronic newsletter and a comprehensive website.

Winners will be named March 30 at the Residential Recycling Conference in Dallas, Texas.
