The state has hired Matt Levi Security to provide security services at the Mayor Wright Homes public housing complex in Kalihi, the Hawaii Public Housing Authority said today.

“Matt Levi and his team, all with law enforcement and community outreach background, are the right people to come on board after the troubling violence tht has been occurring in recent months,” authority Executive Director Hakim Ouansafi said in a news release.

The move comes seven weeks after a 32-year-old nonresident was fatally stabbed on the property Jan. 27.

Police arrested a 33-year-old tenant, but released him because he acted in self-defense, the Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office has said. The tenant was trying to tell people to get away from his vehicle when he was mobbed and knocked to the ground. He pulled out a 2-inch folding knife and began thrusting it, stabbing the man who died, prosecutors said.

The state Sheriff Division is working on a project to establish a permanent presence at Mayor Wright Homes in Kapalama to keep residents safe, the state sheriff said last month.
