Kaia Parnaby was certainly sharp in a shutout against Marist earlier this week.
The University of Hawaii left-hander topped that performance in the rematch on Wednesday.
Parnaby struck out a career-high 14 and threw her second career no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Red Foxes on the second day of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
“Tonight was really special,” said Parnaby, who faced two batters over the minimum while raising her record to 10-0.
After going more than a month into the season before suffering their first loss, the Rainbow Wahine (22-1) bounced back from Tuesday’s defeat against No. 6 Texas. UH, ranked 18th and 19th in the national polls this week, continues tournament play against No. 1/2 California (22-0) today at 6:30 p.m.
“It was a team effort and we all came out firing,” Parnaby said. “I wasn’t the only one out there, the defense and the offense really came out to play tonight.”
Parnaby struck out nine in UH’s 4-0 win over Marist on Sunday in the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament. She began Wednesday’s game by striking out 10 of the Red Foxes’ first 13 hitters.
Just about her only mistake was a throwing error to first in the second inning that accounted for Marist’s only baserunner in the first six innings. She allowed her first walk in the seventh, then got a flyout and a strikeout to complete the no-hitter and her third consecutive shutout.
“I wasn’t thinking about (the no-hitter) really,” said Parnaby, who felt she had something extra in her pregame bullpen session. “I just thought about going out there and finishing the game off for the girls.
“I just felt like I had something behind me tonight that just helped me go out there.”
Marist junior Emily Osterhaus held the UH offense without a hit through 32⁄3 innings until the Wahine put together two walks and three singles in a five-run rally in the fourth.
UH recorded its first hit when Leisha Li‘ili‘i pulled a two-out single through the right side of the infield to score Jessica Iwata from second. The Wahine then executed a double steal with Alex Aguirre beating the return throw to the plate.
Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu lined a single to right to score Jazmine Zamora to give UH a 3-0 lead. After Dara Pagaduan reached on an error, Kelly Majam followed with an RBI single to center. Pagaduan scored when Majam got caught in a rundown between first and second.
Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu added to the lead in the sixth when her fly ball glanced off the glove of left fielder Ashley Corriss at the fence and went over for her fourth home run of the season.
“(The win) was really big, we needed something to get our momentum back on,” Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu said. “We felt upset about it, but (Texas is) a good team and know we can come back and fight harder. That’s what we did today. We were kind of slow in the beginning but we came around.”
