Injured hiker airlifted from Kauai trail

An injured hiker from Anchorage was airlifted this afternoon from Nonou Mountain, also known as “The Sleeping Giant,” on Kauai.

The 38-year-old man was hiking with his wife on the trail near mile marker 1.5 about 11:35 a.m. when he hurt his ankle.

Four fire personnel from the Kapaa station responded to the call and three of them hiked up to where the injured man and his wife were waiting. The firefighters provided first aid while awaiting the arrival of the helicopter with Rescue 3 on board.

The injured hiker was airlifted to the Wailua Houselots Park, where awaiting medics then transported him to Wilcox Hospital.
