Case files papers to run for U.S. Senate

Former U.S. Rep. Ed Case has made his U.S. Senate candidacy official. Case announced in April that he planned to run for the seat being vacated by retiring U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka. On Thursday he filed nomination forms at the Office of Elections to make it official.

Case and U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono will face each other in the Demo­cratic primary in August. The winner will likely face former Gov. Linda Lingle, a Republican, in the general election.

Kamehameha Schools names new principal

Kamehameha Schools announced Thursday that Lehua Veincent has been selected high school principal of its Hawaii island campus.

Veincent is principal of Keaukaha Elementary School and has worked more than 25 years as a teacher and administrator in the state Department of Education, Kamehameha Schools said.

He also has served as principal and founder of the Ke Ana La‘a­hana Public Charter School in Keau­kaha and as vice principal of Hilo High and Intermediate.

Veincent joins Kamehameha Hawaii on July 1.

Women’s panel will hold talk on Frazier book

The Kauai County Committee on the Status of Women will hold a program next week on Frances Frazier’s memoir, “Hali‘a of Hawai‘i: A Legacy of Language,” as part of Women’s History Month.

Frazier’s memoir recounts her rediscovery of the Hawaiian language and passion for translating Hawaiian documents, especially those relating to land deeds and the rights of people of Hawaiian heritage.

Frazier, 97, will be represented by her daughter Stephanie Frazier, publisher Dawn Kawa­hara and others.

The event will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lihue Civic Center.
