A head-on collision in Kaaawa on Saturday night left four people seriously injured and hundreds of motorists stranded.

The collision happened just before 10 p.m. on Kamehameha Highway naer Kaaawa Place and Kaaawa Valley Road.

Honolulu Fire Department rescue personnel used a hydraulic tool to extricate the driver of one of the vehicles.

Police closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions between Kaaawa Elementary School to Kualoa Ranch for more than an hour while the vehicles were being cleared, resulting in a significant traffic snarl along the two-lane highway.
