Chun helps U.S. qualify for Olympics
Hawaii wrestler Clarissa Chun won three matches on Saturday to capture the 105.5-pound division at the FILA Pan American Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.
Chun’s victory qualified the U.S. for the Olympics in that weight class.
Chun beat Patricia Bermudez 8-1, 6-0 in the final and outscored her three opponents by a 43-3 margin.
Florence triumphs in Australia
Hawaii’s John John Florence surfed his way to a win in the Telstra Drug Aware Pro in Margaret River, Australia.
Florence defeated fellow Hawaii surfer Olomana Eleogram in the final by scoring two nine-point rides.
“I’m so stoked to win,” Florence said. “This gives me a lot of confidence going into Bells Beach (the next contest) because I hear the waves are similar.”
Curran leads San Jose State past UH
Dani Curran scored three goals to power San Jose State to an 8-5 victory over Hawaii in women’s water polo on Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
Danielle Lewis scored two goals to pace the Rainbow Wahine (7-0, 0-5 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation).
The Spartans (13-8, 1-3) outscored UH 3-1 in the fourth quarter en route to the win.
UHH and Grand Canyon split in baseball
Jeremy Kaaukai drove in two runs to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 4-3 win and a split of a baseball doubleheader with Grand Canyon on Saturday in Phoenix.
Jeremy Dela Cruz went the distance for the Vulcans (6-23, 3-17 Pacific West Conference), giving up eight hits.
Ernesto Ortiz drove in four runs in the first game for the Antelopes (15-15, 12-11) in a 23-2 win.
Hawaii-Hilo splits with Cal Baptist
Ashley Nelson won a pitchers duel against Emma Holden in Hawaii-Hilo’s 4-1 win over Cal Baptist in the first game of a softball doubleheader split on Saturday in Riverside, Calif.
Nelson hurled a four-hitter and Holden tossed a three-hitter.
The second game was also a pitchers duel as Tory Ferreira delivered a four-hitter for the Lancers (24-5, 10-4 PacWest) in a 2-0 win.
Amber Waracka pitched a three-hitter for the Vulcans (14-7, 9-6) in the loss.
Grand Canyon sweeps Chaminade
Kiley Raica pitched a three-hitter to lead Grand Canyon to a 5-0 victory over Chaminade in the first game of a softball doubleheader split on Saturday in Phoenix.
Lauren Regester drove in two runs for the Antelopes (17-9, 8-2 PacWest).
Elia Lizarraga had two of the three hits for the Silverswords (6-11, 5-6).
In the second game, Stephanie Smith homered and drove in three runs for Grand Canyon in an 8-2 win.
Shannan Hokama and Rayna Strom-Okimoto had two hits each for Chaminade in the second game.
Dixie State takes 2 from Hawaii Pacific
Dixie State swept a softball doubleheader, 8-1 and 6-4, against Hawaii Pacific on Saturday in St. George, Utah.
The Red Storm improved to 14-7 and 7-5 in the PacWest.
Breanne Patton homered and Celina Garces had three hits in the second game for the Sea Warriors (17-9, 11-5).
