City firefighters kicked off a busy weekend battling house fires in Waimanalo on Saturday and in Ewa Beach on Sunday and ended dealing with a possible arson case at Mililani High School football field.
Firefighters were called to a residence on Huli Street in Waimanalo around 10:20 p.m. Saturday for a fire that investigators believe started in a utility room behind a garage, according to Capt. Robert Main, department spokesman. About 32 firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control by 11:06 p.m. and to fully extinguish it by 12:58 a.m. Sunday, Main said.
An undetermined number of people were living in the house, which had no electrical service.
Damage was estimated at $340,000.
Around 12:15 a.m. Sunday, firefighters responded to another house fire, on Makalea Loop in Ewa Beach.
The fire began in an enclosed garage and spread to two bedrooms directly above, Main said.
Bringing the fire under control took 36 firefighters about half an hour.
Damage was estimated at $150,000 to the structure and $150,000 to the contents, including a 2009 Porsche and an electrical vehicle. The two vehicles, plus one other in the garage, were not near the source of the fire, Main said.
A family of five that lived in the home has been taken in by relatives, he said.
Firefighters were also called to the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Sunday afternoon to help with a sparking elevator motor. Firefighters cut off power to the motor and extinguished a few smoldering areas, Main said.
Around 7:40 p.m. firefighters responded to a call at Mililani High School field and found several boxes and other materials stacked near the concession stand on fire. The structure itself was not involved, and the firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly after their arrival.
Scanner transmissions indicated that an accelerant might have been used to start the fire, and Main confirmed that the Police Department had been contacted to investigate the incident as possible arson.
There was also a car fire in Kaimuki and a case of overcooked food in a Piikoi Street condo Sunday afternoon.
