Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso cautioned that his team had yet to face any real adversity after a 14-7 start.
It will now.
The Rainbows will need to bounce back against UC Davis this week following an 0-4 road trip that ended with a 9-3 loss to Gonzaga on Sunday at Washington Trust Field in Spokane, Wash.
Royce Bolinger hit two home runs, and Marco Gonzales was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs as the Bulldogs (16-6) finished off a four-game sweep of the Rainbows (14-11).
Hawaii suffered its first winless road trip in four years and was swept in a four-game series for the first time since dropping all four home games to Cal State Fullerton last year. The Rainbows followed that series by winning nine of 10, starting Western Athletic Conference play 6-0.
After Hawaii hosts the Aggies for a four-game set starting Thursday, UH will begin conference play with three home games against defending champion Fresno State starting April 5.
"This is the first series, really, since the last two games of the Oregon series where we just didn’t play well," Trapasso said.
"I told our guys about how we rebounded after we were swept last year and won (nine of 10) and we’ll see if this team is capable of that."
Trevor Podratz went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, and Collin Bennett doubled twice and scored for Hawaii, which outhit Gonzaga for the second straight game.
The Bulldogs benefited from two walks and five hit batters by four UH pitchers.
Freshman Kyle Dowdy (1-1) took the loss, lasting only two innings. After allowing two runs in the first, Hawaii tied the game on a two-run homer by Podratz, who went opposite field for UH’s fourth home run of the season.
Gonzaga retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning as Dowdy loaded the bases on two hit batters and a walk.
Gonzales, who torched the Rainbows all series, hit a two-run single to right, and the Bulldogs added another run on a fielder’s choice to take a 5-2 lead.
Trapasso earned his first ejection of the season after the top of the fifth inning, arguing an out call at first base that would have loaded the bases with two outs.
Bolinger, who homered off of Lawrence Chew in the fourth inning to make it 7-2, added a solo shot off Jesse Moore in the sixth to put the Bulldogs up 8-3.
Hawaii gave up more runs in the final two games of the series as it had in the previous six.
"Honestly, when you play as bad as we did you just forget about it and move on," Trapasso sad. "I’m excited to see how our young bunch handles this kind of adversity and the guys will bounce back."
Eight of the nine starters collected at least one hit for UH, including junior Billy Nottingham, who started at first base for the second consecutive game.
Podratz had at least a hit in all four games of the series, finishing 6-for-16 with five RBIs to raise his average to .306.
The Rainbows don’t return to the islands until tonight, and will only practice Wednesday before starting their series against UC Davis on Thursday.
The Aggies are 10-9 and play Nevada today and Stanford tomorrow before Thursday’s opener against UH at Les Murakami Stadium.
