PAGO PAGO, American Samoa >> The former grant administrator of American Samoa’s only nonprofit legal services organization has been sentenced to a year and one day in federal prison for stealing nearly $160,000.
Julie Matau on Tuesday was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release, including eight hours a week of community service. She’ll begin her sentence May 29.
Matau and her co-defendant, daughter Andrea Matau, were ordered to pay the money back. Andrea Matau was sentenced to 12 months’ probation, including six months of home detention and eight hours per week of community service.
Julie Matau pleaded guilty to wire fraud. Her daughter pleaded guilty to theft of federal funds.
Prosecutors say more than $128,000 went to Matau and her family members instead of low-income victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.
