Retired postal worker in American Samoa charged with stealing money, stamps

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa >> A retired worker at a U.S. Postal Service branch in American Samoa is accused of stealing money and stamps.

Nikolao Faasala was charged Tuesday in district court with embezzlement and other charges. He was a retail mail clerk who served customers at a post office branch counter.

According to court documents, he allegedly stole nearly $3,000 between January and September 2009. Court documents say he sold stamps to his friends and pocketed some of the money.

An audit uncovered that some of the financial reports regarding money he handled had been falsified to hide the theft.

His lawyer Mark Ude says Faasala has fully cooperated with authorities and has paid the money back.
