Study on drug testing welfare recipients proposed
A measure that would have allowed the state to drug test public housing residents has died for the session.
However, some lawmakers still want to look into the feasibility of drug testing public housing tenants and applicants. A resolution before House committee Tuesday requests a study to explore whether drug screening is an appropriate way to deter drug use among tenants and ensure taxpayer dollars aren’t misused.
The resolution refers to a New York Times article from October that dealt with drug screening for public housing tenants, welfare recipients and others who receive government assistance in three dozen states.
The resolution notes these proposals haven’t gained traction due to concerns about the constitutionality of mandating drug tests, as well as the cost, social implications and other concerns.
