An 18-year-old man was rescued after a boat happened to find him swimming and incoherent in the water about a mile off shore from Canoe Beach in Lahaina.

The man was barely swimming when the crew of the catamaran Teralani came across him about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, said Maui Fire Department spokesman Lee Mainaga. The crew pulled him on board and transferred him to county lifeguards who took the man to shore on their personal watercraft.

Firefighters helped put the man, who was very cold and unable to move, into an ambulance. He was responsive and taken to the hospital in unknown condition.
