HPU softball team wins 2 out of 3
Breanne Patton pitched a five-hitter and Caira Pires drove in the only run with a sacrifice fly to lift Hawaii Pacific’s softball team to a 1-0 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in the Mizuno Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif.
It was the first of three games that HPU played in the tournament on Friday. In the second game, HPU beat Humboldt State 9-1 with Melissa Kirby pitching a four-hitter in the five-inning game and Patton getting two hits and two RBIs. HPU later lost to Sonoma State 5-2 in 11 innings as SSU’s Samantha Lipperd set a Division II single-game record with 26 strikeouts. Patton struck out nine in the loss.
In the same tournament, St. Martin’s scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to beat Chaminade 4-3 in the Silverswords’ opening game. Chaminade later beat Western Oregon 6-5 as junior shortstop Rayna Strom-Okimoto went 3-for-3.
Grand Canyon holds off HPU in baseball
Grand Canyon jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held off Hawaii Pacific 6-3 in a PacWest Conference baseball game in Phoenix.
Wade Tamaru went 3-for-3 for HPU (18-10, 10-8 PWC). Grand Canyon is 17-16, 14-12.
UH women’s tennis team beats UC Davis
Katarina Poljakova, Jamie Pawid and Martina Kostalova won their singles matches and helped win all three doubles matches to lead the University of Hawaii women’s tennis team to a 4-3 victory over UC Davis on Friday at the UH Tennis Complex.
