Deadly crashes, land deal, health care

» Five people were killed and four injured Sunday in a head-on collision on Kula Highway in Upcountry Maui. All of those killed — Maui residents 19 and 20 years old — were passengers in a Dodge Neon that crossed the center line and hit a Suzuki Aerio carrying three Pukalani residents.

» State legislators gave final approval Friday to a $200 million settlement between the state and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs over OHA’s share of former crown lands since 1978. OHA will receive 10 land parcels near the Kakaako waterfront.

» Authorities arrested five people Tuesday, including a Delta Air Lines ramp service agent, in an investigation of an alleged drug ring that used airline workers to bypass airport screening and smuggle methamphetamine into Hawaii from California.

» A 3-year-old boy was killed and his mother and three siblings were badly injured when a car plowed into a Makaha bus stop Wednesday night. Police arrested the driver.

» The U.S. Treasury will end up with a loss of about $60 million from its 2009 bailout of Central Pacific Bank, officials said Thursday. The Treasury gave CPB $135 million but will recoup only about $74 million from the sale of CPB stock.

» A federal review team met with state education officials during a weeklong visit to see if Hawaii is making sufficient progress on school reforms to keep a $75 million federal grant. Results will be announced in about a month.

» Vandals cut screens of 24 exotic-bird enclosures at the Honolulu Zoo overnight Monday, allowing three birds to escape. Two of the missing birds were found Saturday.

» A Waimanalo man, Herbert Kaio-Campbell, who faced 20 years in prison for the highway death of a boy, hanged himself Monday, two days before he was to be sentenced.

» Two studies published last week found that weight loss operations worked better than the standard treatments to control type 2 diabetes in obese and overweight people.

» A JetBlue pilot who stormed through his plane Tuesday ranting about a bomb and threats from Iraq until passengers on the Las Vegas-bound flight tackled him just outside the cockpit was charged with interfering with a flight crew.

» Hollywood director James Cameron completed his journey to Earth’s deepest point Monday, using a specially designed submarine to dive nearly seven miles to explore and film the Mari­ana Trench.

» The leaders of China, South Korea and the United States issued dire warnings Tuesday about the threat of nuclear terrorism during the final day of a nuclear summit in Seoul that was upstaged by North Korea’s plans to launch a long-range rocket this month.

» Pope Benedict XVI demanded more freedom for the Catholic Church in communist Cuba and preached against "fanaticism" in a sermon Wednesday before hundreds of thousands at Revolution Plaza in Havana, with President Raul Castro seated in the front row. The pope’s tour of Latin America also included a stop in Mexico.
