Witnesses sought after woman is injured
Hawaii County police are seeking witnesses to an incident early Saturday morning in South Kohala that critically injured a Waimea woman.
Police said Tuesday that a 26-year-old woman was being treated at North Hawaii Community Hospital after reportedly jumping from a pickup truck that was traveling about 55 mph.
The vehicle was described as a dark blue four-door Dodge Ram pickup truck, reportedly traveling on Akoni Pule Highway between midnight and 1:30 a.m. Saturday and heading in the Kona direction between Kohala and Kawaihae.
The woman was later transferred to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu in critical condition.
The case has been classified as a negligent injury.
Police ask that anyone who observed the truck or has any information about the incident call the Police Department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters may call CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
Boyfriend faces assault and drug charges
A 28-year-old Waikiki man, accused of breaking a finger of his live-in girlfriend last month, is now facing a drug charge after police found a bag of marijuana in their apartment while responding to another confrontation Monday night.
Police were called to the couple’s Liliuokalani Street apartment Monday after the suspect allegedly grabbed his girlfriend’s neck so tightly that she passed out.
The 38-year-old woman told officers of a previously unreported March 16 assault in which the suspect allegedly fractured one of her fingers, police said.
The suspect is facing charges of second-degree assault for the earlier attack, while charges of abuse of a household member and third-degree promotion of detrimental drug are pending, according to police.
