The Hawaii volleyball team’s season came to a disappointing end with a 20-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 loss to UC Santa Barbara in the Thunderdome.
The Warriors fell to 7-20 overall, the most regular-season losses in the program’s history, and 4-18 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
The Warriors needed to sweep this two-match series to avoid finishing in last place in the 12-team MPSF.
Instead they followed up Friday night’s three-set loss with their 15th defeat in the past 16 matches.
The Gauchos improved to 7-15 and 5-15. They have two matches this week to conclude the regular season.
The Warriors tried to shake up the strategy by moving Steven Hunt from left-side hitter to opposite, and opening with middle blocker Jarrod Lofy in the front row. Lofy usually opens in the back row.
The tactics did not help. Hunt had a team-high 14 kills, but he committed 10 errors and finished with .108 accuracy.
The two starting left-side hitters struggled. J.P. Marks had five kills but committed six errors. Scott Hartley had eight kills and six errors.
Harrison Carroll came in and had four kills, hitting .286.
The Warriors played well in the first set, then were inconsistent in the next two.
In the second set, the Warriors rallied from a 19-14 deficit to close to 22-20. But they would not score again. Miles Evans had a kill, then followed with an ace. Blaine Nielsen and Ryan Thompson blocked Hunt at set point.
The Gauchos scored the first four points of the third set, then built leads of 6-1, 12-4 and 20-13.
The Gauchos scored the final five points of the set, punctuated by Kevin Donohoe’s ace.
There were several ties in the third set before the Gauchos pulled away to a 23-21 lead. Marks’ service error set up aloha ball, which was achieved when Nielsen blocked Carroll.
Evans finished with 21 kills and three aces for the Gauchos.
Middle blocker Dylan Davis contributed seven kills and was part of 12 of the Gauchos’ 171⁄2 blocks.
The Warriors return to Honolulu today. Their annual banquet is next Sunday.
