Kauai fire rescue personnel assisted two Lihue teens and a Hanamaulu man after they were caught in a strong current in waters off Anini Beach.

According to fire officials, two 14-year-old girls were stand-up paddling when they got caught in the current and were unable to paddle back to shore Saturday afternoon. The girls’ uncle paddled out on a body board to help but was also caught in the current.

Two firefighters on rescue paddle boards and two lifeguards on Jetski were able to reach the three on the far side of the channel and assist them back to shore.

No one was hurt.

Ocean safety officials said Anini Beach is known for strong currents, and that conditions were especially rough today.
