2 lost hikers rescued from Laie ridge
Two hikers who spent the night on a ridge above Laie were rescued Monday morning by a Fire Department helicopter.
Capt. Gary Lum, Fire Department spokesman, said the helicopter took the man and woman, both in their 30s, from the ridge to a landing zone on Poohaili Street. The two declined medical attention.
Lum said the two were in a party of five hikers who started out at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. After reaching Laie Falls they hiked away on their own. The three others finished the hike at 1:30 p.m., Lum said, and waited until 4:30 p.m. before they called for help when the pair did not show up.
The helicopter crew was able to spot the couple at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. However, clouds set in. The crew resumed the rescue at first light Monday.
