Mililani family tries to put out fire in home but is forced to flee

A Honolulu fire investigator was still trying today to determine the cause of a house fire that caused $85,000 in damage to a home in Mililani.

Firefighters were sent to the two-alarm fire in the area of the 95-100 block of Aumea Loop at 9:38 a.m. Friday and found an addition on the back of the house on fire, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig. The addition housed a laundry room, a storage room, and a workshop. Seelig said the fire appeared to have started in the laundry room.

The residents, a couple and their adult son, tried to use a garden hose on the fire, but it grew too big. They got out without injuries.

Firefighters extinguished the fire shortly after 11 a.m. The siding of a neighboring home sustained about $3,000 in damage from the heat.

Seelig said there were no signs the fire was suspicious in nature. He said the inside of the home wasn’t damaged and the residents returned soon after.
