Support your independent record stores
Today is Record Store Day, the idea of which is to rally support for the 700 or so independent records stores across America, especially the ones that still sell actual vinyl records — remember them?
In Hawaii, the place to celebrate is Hungry Ear Records, in Kailua, and the two Jelly’s stores, in Aiea and Kakaako. Norm Winter, owner of Jelly’s, said there will be three bands and one DJ performing at his Kakaako store throughout the day. At Hungry Ear, co-owner Dennie Chong said Hawaiian Boom Gaspar, keyboardist for Pearl Jam and Po & the 4fathers, along with Kiliona Young and Kawai Hoe of Po & the 4fathers, will be on hand starting at 2 p.m. to sign copies of their new 7-inch vinyl single.
It’s enough to make your head spin.
Support keeping Earth clean and green
Tomorrow is Earth Day, and if this is the first moment you’ve had to think about it, never fear. April 22 doesn’t have to be the last chance to go green, if the folks with Malama Hawaii have anything to say about it.
This online and email network (find it at malamahawaii.org) tracks various environmental jobs, internships and volunteer opportunities throughout the state. It has a pretty impressive archive of topical videos, the occasional music download, a roundup of grants and, of course, a calendar of events that seems to be kept pretty current.
There’s tons of work to do on behalf of Mother Nature, it appears, far more than can be done on a single day in April.
