Arakawa leads Rainbows past Spartans

Jarrett Arakawa allowed one run over 7 2/3 innings to lower his Western Athletic Conference-leading ERA to 1.69 in Hawaii’s 4-1 victory over San Jose State on Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

Arakawa (5-3) allowed five hits with two walks and two strikeouts for the Rainbows (23-15, 4-1).

Trevor Podratz went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Zack Swasey homered to lead Hawaii, which has the fewest losses of any team in WAC play.

Brent Harrison replaced Arakawa with two on and two out in the eighth and got Nick Schultz to ground into a fielder’s choice. Harrison closed out the ninth to earn his team-leading sixth save.

San Jose State fell to 18-16 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Freshman Scott Squier (3-1, 2.70 ERA) will try to close out a series sweep for the Rainbows on Sunday at 10 a.m. Hawaii time.
