Villaflor named to boxing commission
Former world junior lightweight champion Ben Villaflor has been appointed to the Hawaii State Boxing Commission, it was announced.
Villaflor, 59, is among four new appointees confirmed by the Senate.
Villaflor, who serves as Senate Sergeant-at-Arms, was 53-7-6 (31 knockouts) between 1966 and 1976. He won the World Boxing Association title in 1972, lost it and reclaimed it in 1973, and retained it until 1976.
"Ben does a wonderful job here at the State Capitol and I’m confident that he will serve the boxing commission well with his expertise and love for the sport," Senate President Shan Tsutsui said.
Terms for Villaflor, Myoung Oh and Snooky Fujikawa will expire June 30, 2016. Commission chairman Abe Pacheco, who was reappointed, will serve until June 30, 2015. Villaflor earlier served on the commission from 1988 to 1996.
