Expert discusses isles’ native plants
Botanist and author Linda Pratt will tell the story of Hawaii’s native flowering plants in a talk at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium.
"Isolated by thousands of miles of ocean and cut off from the rest of the world for thousands of years, Hawaii boasts one of the highest rates of endemic species," according to a release.
The free talk celebrates the 25th anniversary of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Whale watch, hike set for Wednesday
A guided whale watch and natural history hike is at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday along the Lahaina Pali Trail. The 5.5-mile trek is open to those 15 and older who are fit, experienced hikers.
Hikers will meet at the Pacific Whale Foundation’s Ocean Store in Maalaea at 7 a.m. The hike begins at 7:30 a.m. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the foundation at 249-8811, ext. 1.

Paddleboard lessons available
A new company, Da Kine Stand Up Paddle, is conducting stand-up paddleboard lessons from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday at Napili Bay.
Minimum age for the two-hour lessons is 12 years. Rates are $150 for a private lesson, $125 per person for two people, $100 per person for a group lesson of three to four people.
