One of China’s top diplomats visits Honolulu

One of China’s top-ranking diplomats was in Honolulu for a brief stay.

A spokeswoman for Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s office said the governor greeted Li Changchun when he arrived Tuesday morning at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

The spokeswoman said Li left Wednesday morning. She didn’t have further details or the reason for Li’s visit to Honolulu.

A Honolulu police spokeswoman would not confirm or deny that police closed some roads to escort a dignitary on Oahu over the past two days and referred questions to the Secret Service, who said the Department of State was in charge of security for the dignitary’s visit.

A State Department spokeswoman in Washington, D.C., said she didn’t have any information because the office was closed. No one could be reached at the Chinese Consulate-General in San Francisco.

Li is the propaganda chief of the Communist Party of China and the fifth-ranked official in the country.
