It didn’t take long for Dax McGill to get back in the flow.
Fresh off her win in the girls under 18 division at the ISA world junior’s held in Panama just a few days earlier, McGill was one of the standouts in the Hawaii Surfing Association’s state championships at Ala Moana Bowls on Thursday.
McGill, 14, scored two nine-plus rides in one of her heats and advanced to the final in the girls 12-13 short board competition.
"I am super stoked after Panama, but every event is a new event and I have to work just as hard as I did then," said McGill. "I am super stoked to be here. The waves are really fun, they’re really bowly with a couple barrels out there.
"I am surfing in the 12-13 girls division because as of Jan. 1 was 13," laughed McGill.
One of the more competitive divisions was the junior men’s shortboard division, whose finalists include Kaito Kino, Dylan Walsh, Kaoli Kahokuloa and Kain Daily.
"This contest means a lot because it’s the last one of the contest season," said Kaito, 17, of Honolulu. "Bowls is one the best waves around and it’s cool to see all the outer islands guys surf out here."
Two waves that stuck out were Kaoli’s giant air and Kino’s four big backside snaps, which threw his fins and loads of spray in the air on every one of them.
The girls 14-15 shortboard division final also finished up on Thursday with Bailey Nagy, Maluhia Kinimaka, Nicole Bruggemann and Natalie Smith among the finalists. All were ripping in the afternoon.
The junior men’s shortboard division and girls 14-15 shortboard division were completed Thursday, but the final results will be announced on Saturday.
The event started Thursday morning with waves in the 2- to 3-foot range and glassy conditions. That later changed to onshore and rippable by midday.
The top six qualifiers from each island advanced to the event. The finalists get slots into the surfing America championships, held at Trestles in California.
