State youth sand volleyball championships set
The inaugural Mauna Loa Hawaii State Sand Volleyball Championships is scheduled for all weekends in May at Queen’s Beach.
The event is open to players ages 10 to 18 with competition in four-person and six-person teams, depending on age division. Registration is available at spikeandspeed.com.
Martial arts tournament Sunday
The third Hawaii Martial Arts Karate Group Spring Tournament is Sunday at Manoa Valley District Park’s old gym.
Competition is in kumite, kata, kobundo and three-person synchronized kata. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with competition at 9 a.m.

Practice paddle for OluKai Ho’olaule’a
In preparation for next month’s OluKai paddling events on Maui, a free escorted 3-mile practice run is being offered Saturday.
It is open to paddleboards, SUPs, kayaks, OC1s, OC4s and OC6s and begins at 9 a.m. at the Paia Youth and Cultural Center. The finish is at Kanaha Beach Park.

A $15,000 purse is part of the OluKai Ho’olaule’a downwind races for SUPs (May 12) and OC1s (May 13). The 8-mile course is from Maliko Bay to Kanaha Beach Park.
Honolulu Marathon registration open
Entries for the 40th Honolulu Marathon are being accepted at the first-tier fee.
The cost for the Dec. 9 race is $95 for Hawaii residents, $125 for mainland residents and $180 for international runners. The fees rise after May 25, with three more tiers through Dec. 8.
There is also a companion 10K walk on Dec. 9. The cost is $60 through Nov. 9, $70 through Dec. 8.
The marathon starts at 5 a.m., the walk at 5:25 a.m. For information, go to honolulumarathon.org.
Waikiki Paddle Festival coming up
Ten-time world champion paddleboarder Jamie Mitchell headlines an elite field at the Waikiki Paddle Festival, May 5 and 6, at Fort DeRussy Beach.
The May 5 race schedule includes outrigger canoe sprints and "Survivor SUP," a standup paddleboard event with elimination rounds. On May 6, there is a race from Maunalua Bay to Duke Kahanamoku Beach, team relays and a Waterman Challenge with swim, prone paddleboard and SUP legs.
