Surfboard knocks out woman
Lifeguards rescued a 23-year-old woman Friday after she was hit in the head by someone else’s surfboard while surfing off Waikiki.
A lifeguard saw the incident while patrolling the water on a surfboard and went to the woman at about 4:20 p.m., a lifeguard dispatcher said. The woman was face down and unconscious in the water. She regained consciousness after the lifeguard pulled her onto his board. The lifeguard brought her to the beach fronting the Moana Surfrider hotel, where lifeguards gave her oxygen and stabilized her.
Paramedics took the woman to the hospital in serious condition, an Emergency Medical Services supervisor said.

Maui educator is arrested in sex assaults
A former substitute teacher at Iao School in Wailuku was arrested Friday in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a student from 2008 to 2010.
Jim Alan Balicanta, 40, was arrested by U.S. Marshals at 7:50 a.m. Friday after a Maui Circuit Court judge issued a warrant for his arrest April 20. Balicanta had been indicted for 52 counts of sexual assault, including 27 first-degree counts.
The U.S. Marshals Service and Maui police said the assaults began when Balicanta was a band teacher and the girl was in the eighth grade at the intermediate school. The girl, now a Maui high school student, did not report the incidents until January.
Balicanta pleaded not guilty during his initial court appearance Friday and was being held at Maui County Correctional Center in lieu of $750,000 bail. His bail hearing is set for Wednesday.
A Department of Education spokeswoman said Balicanta worked as a substitute teacher for the department until January. He last worked at Iao School.
