Wahine fall in water polo playoffs
No. 1 seed Stanford beat No. 8 Hawaii 13-3 in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship in Stanford, Calif., on Friday.
Sivan Pardon scored two goals for the Rainbow Wahine (10-13). Ashley Grossman led Stanford (22-1) with four goals.
UH will play for fifth place today.
UH men advance to tennis semifinals
The University of Hawaii men’s tennis team defeated Utah State 4-0 in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference tournament at Las Cruces, N.M., on Friday.
UH advances to the semifinals against Idaho today.
Doubles teams of Chas Okamoto and Charlie Rice at No. 2 and Jonathan Brooklyn and Dmytro Kovalyov at No. 1 won to earn one point. Okamoto, Jared Spiker and Kovalyov won in singles.
UH women advance in WAC tennis
The University of Hawaii women’s tennis team edged Nevada 4-3 in the quarterfinal round on Friday at the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Las Cruces, N.M.
The match was suspended on Thursday with the score tied at 3 because of a wind storm. The last singles match of the day between UH’s Martina Kostalova and Juliette Legendre was stopped with the score tied at 5-5 in the third set and 15-15 in the game and a spot in the semifinals on the line.
The match continued on Friday, and Nevada’s Legendre went up 6-5. But Kostalova battled back to tie it and force the second tiebreaker of the match. Kostalova won 7-4 for a 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory.
Xenia Suworowa, Aglae Van den Bergh and Jamie Pawid won for the Wahine in singles.
UH was scheduled to play No. 3 seed Idaho on Friday.
Cal Baptist sweeps HPU in baseball
Cal Baptist swept the Hawaii Pacific baseball team 5-4 and 4-3 in Riverside, Calif., on Friday.
In the opener, Cal Baptist scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 4-0 lead. The Lancers raced to a 4-0 lead in the second game and held on.
HPU (24-19, 16-17 Pac West) and Cal Baptist (38-10, 31-7) play another doubleheader today.
