Leeward Community College is taking a new approach this year with L‘ulu, its annual culinary arts gala that benefits the school’s culinary program.
In the past, the event honored one Hawaii Regional Cuisine chef each year. The focus now is on the future and building a sustainable food system in Hawaii.
With this in mind, each of the 13 chefs participating will join a farmer, rancher or aquaculture enterprise to feature a locally grown or produced item in his menu offering. Chefs and food producers will be side by side at serving tables to discuss the food.
The lineup of chefs: Alan Wong (Alan Wong’s), Patrick Callarec (‘Ama‘Ama at Aulani), Jon Matsubara (Azure Restaurant), Chai Chaowasaree (Chai’s Island Bistro), D.K. Kodama (d.k Steakhouse), Mark Noguchi (Heeia Pier General Store & Deli), Scott Higa (JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa), Mark Freiburg (Mariposa), Dean Okimoto (‘Nalo Farms), Roy Yamaguchi (Roy’s), Ian Riseley (The Pearl at Leeward CC), Ed Kenney (town) and Russell Siu (3660 on the Rise).
An array of wines, beers, spirits and specialty coffees and teas will be included.
There will be a silent auction as well.
L‘ulu takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the college. Tickets are $125.
