Freshman Rose Huang helped ‘Iolani grab the first-round lead at the David S. Ishii Foundation Girls State Golf Championship on Tuesday at Wailua Golf Course on Kauai.
The Raiders had five players in the top 12 on opening day.
Huang is the individual leader after firing a 2-under-par 71. Baldwin’s Marissa Uradomo was the only other golfer to break par and is a shot back. There is a three-way tie for third at 73, between Waiakea’s Ciera Min, Kalaheo’s Monique Ishikawa and Kauai’s Taylor Viquelia.
Defending champion Eimi Koga, from Moanalua, is tied for sixth at 74 with Punahou’s Kacie Komoto. Both are juniors.
Huang’s teammates, Marissa Chow and Hana Furuichi, both shot 75 to give the Raiders a 221 team total. Baldwin is next at 227. Punahou and Waiakea share third at 228.
Punahou has won the past five state championships.
