Foodland chef takes ‘Supermarket Grand Chef’ crown
Foodland Super Market Chef Keoni Chang won the grand prize at the Food Marketing Institute’s first Supermarket Chef Showdown, in Dallas.
The grand prize is an expenses-paid two day "boot camp" for professional enhancement at the Culinary Institute of America, valued at $5,000.
Chang described himself as "a little stunned right now," and "at a loss for words," but said "one of the best parts of this whole thing was meeting (the other chefs)," and developing friendships. It was "a great experience," he said.
He won $1,000 for his Deconstructed Ahi California Roll in the "Indulgent" category Wednesday, and this morning his dish beat out other supermarket chefs’ entries in the ethnic, family meals and healthy alternatives categories.
Video of the finale and winning announcement is posted online, with the announcement of Chang as the winner at about the 1:55 mark.
