Randi Gongob scored four goals and Kaiser beat Kamehameha-Maui 6-3 to advance to the second round of the Stanford Carr Development Girls Water Polo State Championships at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on Wednesday.
The Cougars (10-5) ran their entire offense through Gongob, benefiting from a stout defense and dumping the ball in to her repeatedly.
"I took a lot of shots, but most of them went over the goal," Gongob said. "Luckily some of them went in, so I am happy about that."
Kaiser, which led 2-1 at halftime, scored four goals in the second half after struggling with Kamehameha-Maui’s style of defense. The Warriors (6-6) spread things out and held the Cougars to just two goals in the first half. Kaiser had been held to five or fewer goals in a match just three times this season against OIA teams, which tend to pack the defense tighter in front of the goal. Gongob finally figured it out after the break, providing all of Kaiser’s scoring in the fourth quarter.

"She’s able to sneak her way into open positions," Kamehameha-Maui coach Leo Delatori said. "She had some nice shots that our goalie didn’t even see. It’s tough to defend that, she put it right where she needed to put it. It’s definitely a different style than we play back home on Maui. It was there for us, we just couldn’t make it happen."
Kaiser, which finished in fifth place in the OIA, will play OIA champion Kahuku today at 4:30. The Red Raiders beat the Cougars
17-5 in the only meeting between the teams this year. Nobody else has scored more than 11 goals against them. Kaiser is 1-4 against the top four teams from the OIA.
"We’ll play Kahuku well," Kaiser coach Sean Barrett said. "We played them once already this season. We should at least give them a good game."
