After surviving two tight battles to give itself a chance to defend its state championship, Mid-Pacific endured more late-inning drama on Saturday to complete its quest.
Senior third baseman Tasi Docktor drilled a tie-breaking three-run double with two out in the bottom of the fifth inning and pitcher Keiki Carlos escaped a seventh-inning jam in the Owls’ 4-1 win over Campbell in the Division I final of the Data House/HHSAA State Softball Championships at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Mid-Pacific’s wins over Waianae and Kapolei in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds were decided by one run each, and Docktor’s double proved to be the decisive swing in the final as Mid-Pacific became the first team to repeat as Division I state champion since the two-tier system was introduced in 2004. ‘Iolani won back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000, when just a single title was at stake.

"It was a close game all the way and we had the right person at the right time," MPI coach Willie Quinn said. "Before she went up, I asked her, ‘Who do want at the plate?’ and she said, ‘Me.’ "
Carlos and Campbell’s Summer Palipti earned complete-game wins in the semifinals on Friday and got the ball for their teams again in the championship matchup.
Carlos worked through some early command issues to earn her third win of the tournament, holding Campbell to four hits and striking out four.
"The defense was really strong. I can never do without them," Carlos said. "They just had my back the whole game.
"For the seniors, it means a lot. To go back-to-back, it’s just crazy."
Both teams were stocked with players who contributed to the last two state titles, Campbell in 2010 and Mid-Pacific last year, and the Owls edged ahead in the bottom of the first when catcher Nicole Lopez’s two-out single to center scored Docktor from second.
Carlos struggled with her command in the second inning, issuing three consecutive walks with two out and hitting Jessica Arata to force in the tying run.
Mid-Pacific loaded the bases on an infield single and two walks in the fifth, and Docktor lined an opposite-field double into the right-center-field gap to score all three runners.
"I was confident. I just came here confident. It was outside high and I went with it," Docktor said. "This means everything."
Campbell’s Nashlynn Anguay led off the seventh by bouncing a single into left field. Carlos came back with two strikeouts before walking Arata to bring the tying run to the plate. But Carlos induced a groundout to second to end the game and begin the Owls’ celebration.
