As the University of Hawaii softball team savored attaining a hard-earned goal, the Rainbow Wahine soon turned their focus to the next.
The Rainbow Wahine captured the program’s fourth Western Athletic Conference regular-season championship with a doubleheader sweep of Utah State on Sunday in Logan, Utah.
An 11-run second inning propelled the Wahine to an 18-0 rout in the first game and they pulled away in the finale to close the regular season with a 10-3 victory over the Aggies.
No. 12/14 UH enters the postseason at 43-5 overall and 17-3 in conference play and will be the top seed in the WAC tournament, which opens Wednesday in Las Cruces, N.M.
UH earned a bye in the first round and will face San Jose State or Nevada on Thursday at 7:30 a.m. Hawaii time in its first game in the double-elimination tournament. Hawaii’s games in the tournament will be televised on OC Sports.
"We’re refocusing because we’re in the postseason now and it’s kind of a whole new start," UH shortstop Jessica Iwata said. "Everybody is 0-0 and we just know what we have to do. Having that regular season under our belt is good because we’ll have that confidence."
The Wahine clinched the regular-season crown by winning the first game on Sunday, and put added distance between themselves and second-place BYU (15-4) by completing the sweep of the three-game series with Utah State (17-36, 4-17).
"Very rewarding," UH head coach Bob Coolen said. "I knew we had it won in the first game, but I didn’t want to be satisfied with having four losses and being tied in the loss column."
The Wahine offense doused any thoughts of Utah State derailing their title hopes by scoring 28 runs on 29 hits in the doubleheader, including seven doubles, a triple and four home runs.
UH leadoff hitter Kelly Majam went a combined 6-for-6 with four RBIs, two doubles and a home run. Iwata homered in both games to move into the team lead with 13 this season.
Catcher Kayla Wartner drove in six runs and had three doubles. Right fielder Sharla Kliebenstein made her first start since March 24 and went 2-for-2 with a home run in Sunday’s opener.
Leisha Li’ili’i enjoyed a
3-for-3 performance in the first game, and Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu drove in four runs.
"Everyone was getting on base and hitting the ball hard," Iwata said. "Hopefully we just keep that going into the next week."
The offense’s output gave pitchers Kaia Parnaby and Stephanie Ricketts comfortable margins to work with throughout the afternoon. Parnaby held Utah State to two hits while throwing her ninth shutout of the season. The junior left-hander improved to 16-2 and will take a streak of 20 consecutive scoreless innings into the WAC tournament.
Ricketts moved to 27-3 with a complete-game win in the second game. She finished with three strikeouts to reach 800 in her career.
UH’s regular-season winning percentage of .896 set a school record, passing the previous mark of .833 (45-9) set in 2007.
"I’m hoping everything we accomplished this weekend just carries over," Coolen said.
Fresno’s Wright to retire
Fresno State head coach Margie Wright announced Sunday that she will retire effective June 30 after 27 years leading the Bulldogs program.
Wright is the winningest coach in NCAA Division I softball history and is second in career wins regardless of sport with 1,454. Fresno State reached the Women’s College World Series 10 times in her tenure, winning the national championship in 1998.
Fresno State (33-21, 13-6) will be the third seed in this week’s WAC tournament and opens against Louisiana Tech on Wednesday.
